Romance and other things

SPOILER ALERT!

I liked it very much

The Family We Make - Kaje Harper

This book was such a lovely read on so many levels. I felt like the characters in the book were real people. I thought that the problems they dealt with were very relatable even if I personally know that I am lucky not to deal with at least some of those issues. I loved that heavy issues were not dealt with by cranking the angst level up to eleven. I thought the love between Rick and his brother Sam , between Rick and Travis was so strong and growing throughout the book. I loved Sam, and Dora, oh my god how I loved Dora. I really liked that homophobic parents were portrayed as nuanced characters too.

But while I thought writing was top notch, weirdly narrator was a little blah for me. I do not know how to reconcile it but here you have it - basically I put book down couple of times before I finished and I can only attribute it to the voice. It was not annoying, it was extremely well done, but it was also a little blah.

I was also having strictly my own issue with one of the problems Travis had to deal with - I should not be blaming the book because it was handled sensitively and realistically and it was not the source of over the top drama which I had been treated to in a different book handling the same issue. Basically - it is serious and we have to deal, but we will deal.

But because this seems to be the *only* medical issue gay couples are dealing with in m/m books, I was irritated. I guess I kind of feel that it became a trope by now. As you can see I am giving the book four stars, a very high rating, because it is my problem, but I had to note it.
