Romance and other things

Great and a reviewing question of the sorts

The Longest Day - Cornelius Ryan

So you know when you review m/m books there are times when you just want to do a one word review, right? Well, this is not so much of the review either, because the word "fantastic" pretty much reflects what I think about this book. As I said elsewhere:

You have to forgive me guys - until few days ago I had no idea that this book is supposed to be the best book about the D-Day. Hey, I am trying to fill those cultural gaps as much as I can, but it is a never ending process :).

Dear Author posted it amongst deals of the day, so I grabbed it for 1.99 which was awesome, but even for this price for me it would be worth every penny. What a fantastic book - on so many levels and not just because of the subject matter, but because it reads as an action/adventure that made me feel glued to the pages and reality just made it more poignant.

I am just amazed at the level of research at how many people he interviewed, how he juggled everything that happened on that day and still made the book so very readable.

So, here is the question. How do you review a non-fiction book? Like lets say I would want to review this book in a more critical way - I do not, but I have couple of the non-fiction books I want to review for DA and I find myself a little bit at loss. I mean, obviously I am not completely clueless - if I find the book poorly written, I will say so and give examples. And if the topic of the book is something I know well, I will call the book on poor research (or praise a good research, whatever it is).

But usually the main focus of my reviews is plot and characterization and I guess that's the crux of the matter for me. You can't really talk about plot and characterization of the non-fiction book, right? It is all real, so whatever happened, happened and whatever real people participate as characters in the book, it is what it is, no matter what the writer will say about them?

Your knowledge and expertise is much appreciated guys :-)
