Did not make much sense

I do not really know what to think about this book. I was in the mood for contemporary YA and this book seemed like a nice break from many dystopian ones. I guess I just did not see a point in a stupid, life threatening game they all felt a need to participate in. I mean I get the "there was nothing else to do", not much employment to be find in the town and all that. But for the plot purposes it just felt all wrong to me - pacing was off. Individual challenges were dangerous, but I felt very little excitement. I at least expected character growth from the main character and I am not sure I got any. Was it the evolution from "you want everything to be bad (another word amazon wont let me use)" in your life to "she understood that she could be happy", she was happy?
I don't know. Romantic relationships or as much as was shown left me quite cold. I do not need romance to be explicit, but I certainly want some chemistry and I felt none.
