Lovely cover

A Ghost Most Elusive - Ally Blue

Blurb:

What’s a guy supposed to do when his mojo’s a no-go?

Mojo Mysteries, Book 2

Adrian Broussard has always considered his ability to talk to ghosts a mixed blessing. Until the night he and his man, Greg Woodhall, find the body of an elderly neighbor. The woman’s ghost whispers murder, then refuses to speak to Adrian again.

She does, however, try to communicate with Greg. An unexpected twist that leaves Adrian grappling with a green-eyed jealousy monster—and he has no idea how to vanquish it.

For Greg, his first experience with talking to a ghost is part fun, part terrifying. Beyond that, he simply wants to help the woman he’d befriended in life. At least Adrian’s just as eager to solve the case, which is good. Because things get real weird, real fast.

Figuring out whodunit isn’t going to be easy, especially with a ghost who seems to be speaking in tongues. But neither of them anticipate the revelations they reveal as they dig deeper into the case. Or the danger those revelations unleash.

Warning: This book contains suspense, spookiness, suggestive nicknames, amateur sleuthing and a grumpy ghost. May cause inappropriate laughter and/or nail-biting.

Review:

For some reason I really love the cover on this one. Beware that this is book two. I did that deliberately - first book bored me after few pages, so I put it aside and never had a chance to come back. But I really do like Ally Blue's writing and even though I do not always connect with her characters I decided to give it a try. I was not feeling confused much, maybe I missed some character development, but so be it. Adrian can talk to the ghosts, he also I guess has some psychokinetic abilities, but I think connecting with the ghosts is his strongest ones. Looks like him and Greg met last book during the investigation, fell in love, etc, they are now together.

As blurb tells you they now stumbled upon a new ghost, only she mostly wants to talk to Greg who really does not have much of paranormal abilities. Adrian can feel her, but she would not communicate. That of course makes him a little jealous (even though he knows it is silly) and more protective of his boyfriend.

Well, ok the reason why I dived in the second book (besides me often starting series in the middle ;)) was because I wanted a gay mystery with established couple, paranormal was an added bonus. I did not mind that the plot lead to some extra tension in their relationship, but what in the name?

This was not a mystery, because resolving a mystery by finally figuring out the name of the killer which ghost pronounced correctly does not freaking count in my mind as a mystery investigation. And all so called investigation was mostly them trying to make a ghost talk. Gah. Sorry. I mean there was some suspense at the end, but for me it just was not enough, not really.

I liked the men together - mostly and I liked that they talked about their issues instead of running away from each other and breaking up, but their talks felt, I do not know, a bit too didactic? Too long maybe? Do not get me wrong - I scowl at the idiots who are incommunicado and all the silly conflicts arise between them because of the absence of communication, but here communication felt a little off and I am not sure why.

Oh well.
